Samuel Kamau Wanjiru (10 November 1986 – 15 May 2011) was a Kenyan long-distance runner and a product of the Mt Kenya High Altitude Training Camp program (currently Mt. Kenya Talents Development Centre) from 1998 to 2002, before he went to Japan on a scholarship.

Olympic Glory

Wanjiru achieved international acclaim as the Olympic marathon champion at the 2008 Beijing Games, where he set a new Olympic record time of 2:06:32 hours to become the first Kenyan man to win gold in the marathon event.

World Records & Achievements

Wanjiru was declared the 2008-2009 World Marathon Major winner and pocketed a $500,000 USD jackpot. He was the youngest runner with three World Marathon Majors victories — in Beijing, London and Chicago.

He held the 10,000m U20 World Record from 2005 until 2024 and set the half marathon world record three times.
